How to improve your typing speed
Speed follows accuracy. Start slowly enough that you can hit almost every key correctly, keep your fingers resting on the home row, and look at the screen rather than the keyboard. Short daily sessions of ten to fifteen minutes build muscle memory far faster than one long weekly session.
Use the mistake practice mode after each test: repeating the exact words you fumbled is the quickest way to remove your personal bottlenecks. Change the content type to Programming or Business if you mainly type code or reports, since punctuation and capitalisation patterns differ a lot between them.
Frequently asked questions
- How is WPM calculated?
- Words per minute uses the standard formula: correctly typed characters divided by five, divided by the elapsed time in minutes. Raw WPM uses every character you typed, including mistakes.
- How is typing accuracy measured?
- Accuracy is the number of correctly typed characters divided by the total characters you typed, shown as a percentage.
- What is a good typing speed?
- Around 40 WPM is average, 60–80 WPM is fast, and above 100 WPM is expert level. Accuracy above 95% matters more than raw speed for real work.
- Do I need an account?
- No. The typing test works instantly and your results are stored only in your own browser using local storage.
- Does the timer start immediately?
- No. The timer starts on your first keystroke, so you can read the passage and get comfortable first.
